Vienna in October: Indian summer, art experience and Arabian Nights at Duschel Apartments

Vienna in autumn can be a wonderful, sunny, warm and golden experience – or a wet, grayish, chilly and rather unpleasant place to be. Duschel Apartments cant guarantee perfect weather conditions for your stay, but we gladly deliver some decent ideas for any kind of weather.

Indian summer and Halloween

Golden sunbeams spot red-golden leaves, foliage softly rustles under your feet and shiny chestnuts tempt you off the track: Viennas Indian summer is definitely worth a walk! Although locals gave it the rather unflattering name „Altweibersommer“, which means „Old Ladies Summer“ and has something to do with long spider web strings floating through the air like the fine hair of old women.

Go for a walk in one of Vienna’s beautiful parks like Vienna Stadtpark (where the statue of Johann Strauss is covered all over in shiny gold), Augarten (the home of the Wiener Sängerknaben and Augarten Porzellan), Schönbrunn (with the famous castle and Gloriette), Belvedere Gardens (between the upper and lower castle, hosting a very interesting collection of typical Austrian Alp plants and a veritable bamboo forest) or Vienna Burggarten with its beautifully restored Orangerie (hosting a Coffeehouse, Restaurant and Bar). Take small pieces of old bread and some nuts with you: Vienna’s ducks and squirrels will give you a warm welcome!

Combine a great nature experience with a unique walk through history (a bit more on the morbid side): Discover Viennas historic cemeteries! You can visit Mozarts grave on Sankt Marxer Friedhof, the grave of „Rock me Amadeus– Falco on Zentralfriedhof Vienna as well as many other wealthy, but rather unknown Viennese of the last centuries in their scary-but-beautiful crypts. Strolling around on Vienna Zentralfriedhof you might discover abandoned Jewish tombstones, Roma crucifixes in best neighborhood to count- and headless stone angels. Since the cemetery is huge, you can even rent a Fiaker (horse-drawn carriage) and comfortably visit the white art nouveau church with its magnificent dome (don’t miss the blue starry sky on the inside).

BTW: Halloween is quite unknown in Vienna. There is not much going on except traditionally visiting family graves with candles and flowers on Nov. 1st and 2nd. So don’t expect being invited to fancy Halloween parties except you are hosting them yourselves at Duschel Apartments.
