Events and Highlights at the beginning of the year

The new year starts brilliant in Vienna – especially the traditional balls have their high season. We gathered all the best tips for January in Vienna for you in our new blogpost.

How time flies … Christmas and New Years Eve are over, but there is more to come. The famous Viennese balls start into their high season. If you have to choose for one ball out of the dozens, you sure will have a hard time to decide. Whether you are more into custom and traditional outfits, lush decorations or glamouros gowns – there is one thing every ball has in common: You got to dance the whole night through.

Balls in January

One of the first balls of the year is the ZuckerBäckerball at the Hofburg on the 12th of January. The guests of the sweetest night of the year will find their pleasure not only with music but also with sweets. Besides the numerous stations, where you can grab yourself little nibbles, the guests also have their chance at the big tombola to win one of the 3.000 cakes. At the opening ceremony star-tenor Vincent Schirrmacher will sing and the dancers Ketevan Papava and Roman Lazik will dance to the „Schatzwalzer Opus 418“ from Johann Strauss son. Just at the next day, there will be two balls. The 95th Flowerball will be themed around Flowerpictures. The Viennese gardeners present 100.000 blossoms in unforgettable pictures. On the same day, the Steirerball will take place at the Hofburg. The guests will enjoy a broad programme around styrian traditions, beer tapping included. On Saturday, the 14th of January, the students and guests of the Vienna University for Economics and Business Administration meet up at the Hofburg. Among the 4.500 guests, there will be high representatives of economics, politics and research.

Balls for Musicians and Music Lovers

One of the most beautiful balls is the Vienna Philharmonic Ball at the Konzerthaus. There you can not only enjoy the breathtaking architecture of the building, but also the ceremonial opening with the Vienna Philharmonic. Another musical highlight is the Vienna Boys Choir Ball at the 27th of January at the Wiener Kursalon. The ball will be themed around Brasil. Because of that some of the highlights will be the Camaa Kult Orchestra, the Tropical Live Samba Show Brasil and of course the traditional midnight musical interlude by the students of the Vienna Boys Choir. If you are more into modern kind of music, you have to be a guest at the Viennese HipHop ball on 28th of January. The opening ceremony will connect the two worlds of classical and Hip Hop music. Artists, MCs, DJs and dancers of the WHHB All Stars will open the ball with the support of violinists with their own compositions. From the beginnings of Hip Hop forward to the year 2016 nothing will be missed out.

More tips for January in Vienna

If you are not a fan of classical balls, we have some more tips for your January in Vienna. The new festive landscape at the townhall square parc invites all visitors to go ice skating since the end of December. There is a total area of 4.500 m² to enjoy the ice, daily from 10am to 9pm. If you don’t have your own pair of skates, don’t hesitate to hire some from the rental company. In case you want to watch real pros on the ice, there is a chance from 12th to 22nd of January at the Wiener Stadthalle. The group from „Holiday on Ice“ will be guest with their show „Believe“, which is a modern production of Romeo and Juliet. Coffee lovers will find their pleasure at the Ottakringer Brauerei from 13th to 16th of January. The vienna coffee festival will feature the best artisan coffee & co. There will be tastings and demonstrations from world class baristas, interactive coffee workshops, coffee based cocktails and much more.
