Summer in Vienna
Summer in Vienna is finally here and what is better than enjoying a movie outdoors on a warm summer evening with cool beer or wine in your hand? Across Vienna, there are plenty of open air cinemas, often with free admission.
We have a few tips on the program for this season.
VOLXkino
From June to September, the oldest open-air cinema is on tour again through Vienna, and presents a selection of recent international documentaries, current films, short- and music films. In some cases even award-winning productions of the last years are shown and always with free admission for 28 years now. The first and only travelling cinema in Austria stops in parks, public places or markets and gives the movie experience a special charm since 1990. The entire program includes almost 50 films.
Our movie recommendation:
July 21st, 9pm – Dornenplatz, 1170
Ein Mann Namens Ove
A touching story about a miserable and grim neighbor who is very much suffering and losing life with the loss of his beloved wife. Until his new neighbor drives over his mailbox and turns Ove’s life completely upside down.
Kino am Dach
The highest and only Rooftop Cinema in Austria is on the roof of the main library of Vienna (Urban-Loritz-Platz 2a, 1070) and invites you this year for the 14th time to a unique open air filming experience over the rooftops of Vienna. The extensive program includes various classics, award-winning international and local productions, which are broadcasted from mid-June until the end of August. The highlight here is that you can also refresh yourself at the CINEBAR with a cool beer, wine or cocktail on hot evenings. If you don’t feel like watching a movie you are also welcome to just pay the bar a visit and enjoy the view. Admission for the movies is 8 € and reduced 7 €.
Our movie recommendation:

Little Men
An English movie with German subtitles and shown for the first time in Austria, Little Men tells the story of 2 teenage boys at the age of 13 years in Brooklyn. The 2 boys, seemingly very different guys, share the common interest for girls, computer games and the desire to go to a renowned art school after the summer. They develop a close friendship, which is soon put to the test because of the conflicts their parents are dealing with amongst each other.
Kino im Schloss
In a historic ambience, the castle Neugebäude opens its doors daily from July to September at 9:30 pm for an open air movie experience. Here, even the little ones will have their own kids-cinema. Comfortable sofas, a cocktail bar and a buffet invite you to linger. You can enjoy inspiring and award-winning movies in the German version even when it rains as the seating area is fully covered by a roof. The renaissance castle is one of the most important buildings in Vienna and offers various extras such as Movie-Monday, Ladies & Gentlemen Days, Family Days and Popcorn-Tuesdays.
Our movie recommendation:
July 8th, 9:30pm – Simmeringer Otmar-Brix-Gasse 1, 1110
Nichts zu verschenken
A splendid French comedy about a man named François Gautier, who is always keen to keep his money together and doesn’t like to spend a penny too much. When his 16-year-old daughter enters his life, he tries to hide his tick and gets tangled up in more and more lies. These will soon cost him a fortune.
