Open-air cinema and wine taverns in Vienna

Outdoor cinema or relaxed visits to Austria’s rustic wine taverns on warm summer nights? Vienna has a lot to offer this time of year.

Besides the typical touristy sights we would definitely recommend exploring Austria’s beautiful capital city away from the classic tourist track. Vienna offers a wide spectrum of activities especially for the warm evenings throughout the summer.

The start of summer also kicks off the outdoor cinema season in Vienna. The program is broadly diversified and made to suit everyone’s taste. According to this year’s motto “High Lights” Vienna’s public library for example offers cinematic festival- and box offices successes as well as classics and cult movies at its yearly event “Kino am Dach” taking place until the 31st of August. The Wiener Augarten creates a particularly wonderful atmosphere at “Kino wie noch nie” where 60 movies will be publically displayed until the 28th of August. If you are a horror film enthusiast, you will definitely get your money’s worth!

Another very advisable option would be “Kino unter den Sternen” taking place at Karlsplatz. This event celebrates its 20-year-anniversary until the 23rd of August, placing this year’s main focus on Austrian cinema.

However the largest and best-visited outdoor cinema would be the film festival taking place at Vienna’s town hall square until the 4th of September. Visitors can watch various opera- and orchestra performances as well as pop and rock concerts outdoors while enjoying a wide range of culinary highlights offered by 28 different restaurateurs.

Typically Austrian – a selection of wine taverns in Vienna

Especially Vienna’s outlying districts are known and loved for their rustic wine taverns (also called “Heurigen” by the locals). This is where we would definitely recommend our guests to stop by on a warm summer evening. Numerous taverns and restaurants such as the Heurigen “Sirbu” are located around the Kahlenberg and are really worth a visit – good food, a wonderful view of the mountainside and walks along the hill definitely will make your stay worth your while. In Vienna’s 19th district you can find the Heurigen “Zawodsky” with its romantic and shady spots, and of course its fine food. Near the city border at the foot of the Bisamberg you’ll find another highlight – the “Wildkräuterbuschenschank Weinhandwerk”, which is not only located in the center of their vineyards but also convinces with its exquisite natural cuisine. If you are looking to experience the “Heurigen-feeling” more centrally we would recommend visiting the “Ungargrill” located in the 7th district of Vienna. In its garden ivy is growing wildly and their down-to-earth Heurigen sandwiches are delicious!
