Are you planning on spending Christmas and New Year in Vienna? The Duschel family has the best tips for you to make sure you don’t miss any highlights during this special season.
December in Vienna is not only very romantic but is also filled with a lot of exciting events. Besides strolling around various Christmas Markets (do check out our last blog entry to find out more), you can also enjoy festive Christmas sounds on different Christmas-themed happenings.
On the 6th of December „Swinging Christmas“ will take place at the Wiener Konzerthaus, where songs by Frank Sinatra, Louis Armstrong, Glenn Miller and Ella Fitzgerald will be played for your entertainment. If you are a fan of Gospel music you definitively have to attend the concert of the Golden Voices of Gospel at the Wiener Konzerthaus. Their show „Tribute to the 19th Century Jubilee Singers“ is really worth a visit. At the 16th and 17th of December the gala „Christmas in Vienna“ will take place, also at the Wiener Konzerthaus, which is a nice tradition every year. Opera stars like Dmytro Popov, Günter Haumer or Vesselina Kasarova are going to perform accompanied by the ORF Radio-Symphonieorchester. Also the Vienna Boys‘ Choir is part of the festive program.
Concerts on Christmas in Vienna
For all of you who love concerts inside the beautiful setting of a church, we really recommend the following events: At the 23rd of December the advent concert of the solists from the Wiener Kammerorchester will take place at St. Stephen’s Cathedral. Besides that you may also want to listen to „Trumpets in Concert“ in one of Vienna’s oldest churches, the Minoritenkirche, at the 10th, 15th and 17th of December. Classics by Vivaldi and Händel but also modernday Christmas songs will be part of the program. Fans of gospel should not miss the gospel shows of „The Original USA Gospel Singers & Band“ taking place from the 12th to the 14th and from the 18th to the 20th of December. The ensemble of „The Christmas Gospel“ will definitely get you into the Christmas spirit – this event will take place in the beautiful Karlskirche on the 2nd, 3rd, 9th, 10th and 16th of Dercember. If you would rather listen to classic choir music, be sure to check out the international advent concert at the Viennese townhall, where 80 different choires from all around the globe will be performing on all 4 advent weekends.
New Year in Vienna
After Christmas follows New Year’s which is of course celebrated thoroughly in Vienna. One of many highlights this time of the year is the traditional New Year’s trail, for which the Viennese old town center is transformed into a huge party venue starting at 2pm on the 31st of December and ending at 2am on the 1st of January. Food, drinks and good music from pop, to rock and walz will be provided at the many stations alongside the trail.
Another loved Viennese tradition is to dance into the New Year – there are many „last-minute“ dancing classes the afternoon before New Year’s at the Viennese Graben. Opera-fans can also enjoy Johann Strauss‘ „Fledermaus“, which will not only be performed at the Vienna State opera, but also be broadcasted outdoors. Other elegant ways to celebrate New Year’s would be a boat cruise on the Donau, the Hofburg New Year’s ball and the New Year’s Gala taking place in the Viennese townhall.
New Year’s wouldn’t be the same without spending the day after at Vienna’s townhall square. Enjoy your hangover breakfast alongside the live broadcast of the New Year’s concert performed by the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra.
